A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the national leader.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in public projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
